Lulu began the proceedings by singing ‘Shout’, before Deacon Blue took to one of the night’s stages for ‘Dignity’, sparking a social media surge for the group as they performed.

The ceremony also saw the flag being passed on to the city of Gold Coast, Australia, which will hold the next games in four years.

Australia also contributed a number of musical segments to the ceremony, showcasing what they will have to offer at the 2018 games.

Minogue finally took to the stage to perform her 2000 hit ‘Spinning Around’, accompanied by dancers dressed in top hats and as show girls.

Her segment illustrated a story of a typical night out in Glasgow, with the pop princess also singing ‘Into The Blue’, ‘Love at First Sight’, ‘All the Lovers’ and stepping back in time with ‘The Loco-Motion’.

After a costume change, Minogue finished off her set by singing ‘Beautiful’ and ‘Can’t Get You Out of My Head’. One awkward moment occurred when a fan tried to interrupt Minogue’s performance, but was blocked by security.
